When he finds out his daughter is actually the product of an affair Beth had, he kills her father. When people are blocked, only static appears and is heard in place of their bodies. She ended up blocking Joe, which means he couldn't see her or any of her family - until she dies, at least. Joe then tells Matt about his fiancé Beth and the time they disagreed on whether she would get an abortion.
